Court lets rape victim go back to Berlin

On Wednesday, accompanied by her lawyer Shilpi Jain and an official of the German embassy, the victim arrived amid high security in Alwar court premises, her head draped in a scarf. The Berlin University student was provided extra security in view of the threats.

Jain said the victim’s statement and her cross-examination were recorded in the presence of the prosecutor and defence lawyers. The lawyer said the court had allowed the victim to return to Germany, as she would not be required to appear again. She would fly back in a few days and was in touch with her family in Germany, her lawyer added.

Summons issued by the Alwar court could not be delivered to two witnesses, Christopher Krug and Ariane  German friends of the victim’s who were not present in Delhi. Hence, their statements could not be recorded. In all, 20 witnesses would be examined in this case.

On March 20, the German national was allegedly raped in a hotel room by Mohanty, a student of the Institute for Integrated Learning in Management at Delhi and son of a DGP-rank officer in Orissa.
